Doctoral Research

From everyday practices to policy: Food safety concerns and strategies among the urban poor in retail environments in Bangladesh

Wageningen University & Research, 2018–2025 · Environmental Policy Group · Awarded with fellowship, accepted without revisions.

Conducted within the Food Systems for Healthier Diets (FSHD) global project funded by IITA and CGIAR. The research asked how poor urban households in Dhaka understand and manage food safety risk, how informal vendors cope with the same pressures, and whether a decade of national food safety policy has reached either group.

The work combined household surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, walk-along methods, and systematic policy document analysis. It produced four peer-reviewed articles and a policy brief for government and civil society stakeholders.

Selected Research Projects

2018–2025

Food Systems for Healthier Diets (FSHD)

Wageningen University & Research / IITA / CGIAR

Doctoral research on urban food safety governance and retail practices in Bangladesh. Designed and executed quantitative surveys and qualitative fieldwork; trained and supervised a six-member research team.

2011–2018

Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS)

IFPRI, Poverty, Nutrition and Health Division

Cleaned and documented data for public release; analysed two rounds for agricultural and dietary diversity and child and adolescent nutrition; supported donor reporting.

2017–2018

Assessing Bt Brinjal Impact

USAID-funded RCT with IFPRI and Cornell University

Designed farmer diaries tracking ten months of production, costs, pests, pesticide use, and labour; contributed to research design, questionnaires, and field training.

2016–2018

Agriculture, Nutrition and Gender Linkages (ANGeL)

USAID and A4NH-funded RCT, IFPRI

Analysed baseline data, co-authored the baseline report, and supported endline questionnaire design and analysis.
